What is the Deuce Project?

The Deuce Project is a program that has been running on 89.1fm in Kalamazoo for about 10 years. We play music that contains references to sci-fi, science, mathematics, or anything in that vein. The songs' connection can be via the lyrics, band name, song name, album name, or sometimes just the general aesthetic of the song. Please enjoy. [Banner Image: 1947 by Aurorabomb]

Artist Spotlight: Spoozys Pt. II: CE-III

Spoozys: CE-III

Well, I found CE-III. It is only in 128 kps, but that is 128 kps better than before.

We actually haven't even had time to listen to this album all the way through yet, but the first couple of tracks were surprisingly different from previous releases.

God Mountain released this album back in the day and according to their catalog it is still available. If you have the $ for shipping and can figure out how to order it we suggest you do. However, we have yet to receive word on how to purchase the actual cd despite being told by the webmaster that it is available. Once we find out anything we will let you know!

Arist Spotlight: Spoozys

Spoozys - Existence of Super Earth

First of all, we would like to apologize for being behind on the podcasts. Our captain must maintain his earthling cover while infiltrating and hence has been submerged in your Earth college tradition of writing term papers.

In the meantime, we have decided to explore further the touch of the Plastics on the Tokyo Neo-New Wave scene, and we just happened to have received a recent delivery with The Spoozys debut album, the 1998 Existence of Super Earth. Unfortunately, we do not have the antiquated technology necessary to make a two-dimensional "scan" of the cover image and all Drexzor turned up in his searches on the web were tiny images. Hence, you get the above image of the Spoozys in full-gear (they often started their shows in these outfits and, typically, lost the helmets after a bit.)

Having only been familiar with Astral Astronauts and the Astro '99 EP, we were surprised to hear the sounds on this disc. The Plastics influence is obvious at first listen. The jangly guitars, the synthesizer sounds, all a bit reminiscent of this band's forefathers/mothers. However, there is a touch more of surf-style guitar found here. Furthermore, this album is a bit "unpolished" as opposed to the later works and it really gives a sense of how the band developed over the course of time.

The band had a lot of buzz with their U.S. release of Astral Astronauts, but this quickly faded. So quickly, in fact, that their third album 'CE-III' is almost impossible to find. (if anyone has a copy, PLEASE send us a rip or a link to a reputable seller who will ship to the U.S.).

Spoozys are often compared to the U.S. surf-sci-fi-rock band Man or Astroman?. The fact that Spoozys toured with MOA after Astral Astronauts was released probably helps to strengthen this connection. While this is understandable to some degree, it is worth noting a significant difference. MOA are, at their heart, a straight-up surf-rock band that utilizes some cool sci-fi samples in their songs. With the exception of MOA's A Spectrum of Infinite Scale and perhaps some of the disappointing Eeviac, MOA always seemed happy to let their guitars do the talking. Spoozys do a nice job of mixing in synths with their guitars, with an interesting and satisfying experience being the result of their sonic concoctions. None of this is meant to detract from MOA or really to state one band is better than the other, but simply to note that the comparison oft made is not exactly apt.

Astral Astronauts is a great album. It mixes the eccentric blips and beeps found on this disc with a tighter song structure and higher production values. That said, we actually are digging this album a bit more than its predecessor. The experimentation with vocal effects, the pure sci-fi theme running throughout the album, everything about it just sparks interest a bit more than the later releases. It is interesting to note the similarities in sound between Spoozys and their contemporaries such as P-Model and Polysics. While Spoozys (apparently) have disappeared, it really establishes that there was a lot of innovation taking place in the late 90s in Tokyo. We may also put up the Spoozys remix of a Polysics tune "Which!" off of the 6-D album later this week. Until then, enjoy the Surf Space Invaders From Out of Space sound of the Spoozys!

Utilizing Image Processing to Digitize Mechanically Recorded Sound

Update: I just realized that I didn't credit whatever blog I originally read about this on. Unfortunately, I just dumped my short-term memory cache and did not make a backup of that data. Perhaps it was a news story posted on http://no-datta.blogspot.com/ [I am told by Drexzor that this inference is almost certainly correct]

This is an interesting article regarding a recent contract between the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the library of congress to digitize mechanically recorded sound (cylinder recordings etc...) utilizing image processing methods that are also being implemented for the human discovery of the Higgs-Boson Particle. (Honesty, you humans still utilize "particles" in your physics? Wow. You should be glad that with our invasion we will also share some of our scientific knowledge with you organ-sacks.)

The Echo of Plastics

It is no secret that up here on Deuce Project Station we love Polysics. One day Drexzor was doing a bit of research and noted that the Polysics song "Good" on 1st P is a cover of a track by a band called Plastics. Well, we had heard of Plastics before and actually had some of their music in our archives in .ogg form. Well, we gave Drexzor the job of converting the music to 320 kps mp3s for our listeners to enjoy. Thus this post.

This is a great record. Most (if not all) of these tracks appeared on various singles and albums prior to appearing on Welcome Back. However, all of these tracks were re-recorded for this release. (Here is a discography with a lot of informative notes about the band)

There is a lot to love about this recording. You can hear a bit of Talking Heads/Devo/B-52s in here. The jangly guitar riffs sometimes sound a lot like B-52s, but not at all derivative. 'Cards' reminds me a lot of the Talking Heads or maybe even Gang of Four with that mixture of
dance-floor rhythms and stripped-down punk sensibility all in one.

Plastics never really had a lot of influence here, which is a damn shame. However, they had a HUMONGOUS influence on a lot of current Japanese bands (Polysics and the Spoozys included).

So...Polysics essentially led to us recognizing this band. The interesting thing with this type of backwards discovery is noting just how much Plastics influenced Polysics. Listen to both versions of Good...then go on and listen to other Polysics tracks of the 1st P era. The mark of Plastics is there...the unique song structure, playing around with repeating guitar riffs that tug at your sanity, the (sometimes) absurd lyrics, it is all there...not copied, but homaged. This is cool stuff, and we highly suggest you give it a listen:

Like A Deer in A UFO's Headlights

We have decided that future podcasts will be made available in two formats. We will continue offering a continuous mix of the show, as it appears on-air at WIDR. We will also be offering the broadcast divided into two parts that are quicker to download, and more cd-burnable since we have had requests for more easy-to-transfer versions of the show. Unfortunately Drexzor screwed up and cut this episode into two unequal parts...hence, the two-part download will appear later. For now though, submerge yourselves in the phenomenological experience of being a Deer in a UFO's Headlights for two-straight hours.

Artist Spotlight: Peter Thomas Sound Orchestra: Futuremuzik

Peter Thomas is a regularly featured artist on The Deuce Project. The reason? His music is simply amazing. Thomas is probably best known for his work in soundtracks for various film and television projects. Most notably, at least for this show, is his work on the German program entitled Raumpatrouille (Space Patrol). According to some sources, this is the first recorded musical use of a vocoder.

Thomas did quite a bit of recording with his Sound Orchestra. The orchestra itself was a bit of a revolving door group, featuring various jazz and session musicians found around Germany @ the time.

The liner notes on this album actually make it worthy of purchase on their own. Here are a few of my favorite bits:

Ingfried Hoffman on Thomas's relation with the musicians: "he came with a beer coaster into the studio on which he had written a few basic ideas. The rest was up to us. Only later did we realize the large degree of freedom he gave us made his music possible.

On Thomas's technical innovation: "...in the '60s Thomas and his engineer Herr Wicha created a revolutionary 12-oscillator (!) synthesizer they called the Tho-Wi-Phon."
The story goes on to note that the CIA became interested in the frequency range of the Tho-Wi-Phon and adapted elements of its design for their experiments in sub-sonic weaponry. [The instrument is now located in the Deutsches Museum in Munich]

Artist Spotlight: Dr. Samuel Hoffman/Les Baxter/Harry Revel/Billy May

Waves In The Ether: The Magical World Of The Theremin

By: Harry Revel, Dr. Samuel Hoffman, Les Baxter, & Billy May

We've decided to share a couple of our favorite recordings that you fleshbags may not be familiar with. This particular "album" is actually a trilogy of recordings bringing together the great Les Baxter, Dr. Samuel Hoffman, and Harry Revel* (so you know it is bound to be dope.)

All three LPs are composed by Revel and feature the theremin work of the good doctor Hoffman. The first two (Music Out of the Moon and Perfume Set to Music) feature the famous Les Baxter as the conductor, while the third (Music for Peace of Mind) features Billy May as the conductor.

One interesting historical/trivia note is that Perfume Set to Music was actually sponsored by the Corday perfume company due in part to the success of Music Out of the Moon. The idea was that each piece would in some way represent different fragrances in the Corday line.

I highly suggest buying this album if you are interested in any of the artists' work or theremin music in general. The track listing for the albums is as follows:

Music Out Of The Moon
1. Lunar Rhapsody
2. Moon Moods
3. Lunette
4. Celestial Nocturne
5. Mist O' The Moon
6. Radar Blues

Perfume Set To Music
7. Toujours Moi [Always Me]
8. Tzigane [Gypsy]
9. Possession
10. L'Ardent Nuit [Ardent Night]
11. Jet
12. Fame

Music For Peace of Mind
13. This Room Is My Castle of Quiet
14. The Darkness Gives Me You Again
15. Remembering Your Lips
16. My Troubles Float Away Like Fallen Leaves
17. Your Soft Hand On My Brow
18. I Dream of A Past Love
