Walking in Space With Mort - The Deuce Project Jan. 12
(Update: The link was not working, this should be fixed now. If the hyperlink doesn't work, the correct URL is http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YT2T1PC5. Sorry about that.)
Mort Garson recently passed away. Mort was 83 years old. I only recently started listening to Garson's work. My first exposure to his unique style was his Electronic Hair Pieces album, which I originally ran across on the excellent blog Egg City Radio. Mort's work is rather impressive, especially given the time period he is working within. As Mr. Fab points out on Music for Maniacs, Electronic Hair Pieces is one of the few moog-sploitation albums Garson did. However, even when listening to that album it is worth noting some of the complexity of the arrangments he showcases, rather than a simple melody-match that is found on other Moog albums of the time.
I first read about Garson's passing on Music for Maniacs, and immediately thought it would be proper to do a tribute to this early electronic music pioneer. Oddly enough, the song Space Walker, performed by The Time Zone and I believe composed by Garson, was already slated to play as the second song of this broadcast. So I took that song, along with some of the gems offered up on M4M, and some personal favorites from his albums, and put together the tribute set you will hear later in this broadcast.
This is one of the most interesting aspects of the new community of music blogging that has been becoming more and more popular in recent years. I probably would have not discovered Garson, or at least the numerous examples of his work, if not for these blogs forming the community that they have. So, I want to thank Music for Maniacs, Office Naps, and Egg City Radio for the great work they've done. They turned all of us at Deuce Project Station onto Mort Garson, and are partly responsible for the set featured in this show.
