What is the Deuce Project?

The Deuce Project is a program that has been running on 89.1fm in Kalamazoo for about 10 years. We play music that contains references to sci-fi, science, mathematics, or anything in that vein. The songs' connection can be via the lyrics, band name, song name, album name, or sometimes just the general aesthetic of the song. Please enjoy. [Banner Image: 1947 by Aurorabomb]

It isn't all about music...

A couple of weeks ago, Valve Software released their highly anticipated "The Orange Box." The Orange Box is a pretty fantastic compilation of games, bringing you Half-Life 2, along with Half-Life 2: Episodes 1&2, the multiplayer Team Fortress 2, and the game I've been waiting for: Portal

Well, for those of you out there who didn't pick up the set, the good people at Armor Games have released a flash game based upon Portal. I'm not usually big on flash games, but I found this to be really entertaining. Enjoy!

The Heliostatic Sounds of October 21st

Here is the link to the show as 1 mp3:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=41RAO180

I am incredibly busy this week, so I will probably only be putting the show out as a single mp3 this week. If anyone has problems with downloading the show, please e-mail me and I will fix the problem.

This was a really fun show. It started off with a flood of requests. Most of them were fulfilled, all except the birthday request for Liz. Unfortunately, I left the Servotron album back on the ship, and all I had was a single song on my music playing devices. So, sorry about that Liz, but Curt wishes you well (though I think I lost my mind and said Kirk on air. Sorry about that Curt.)

We also had a request for ST37 . I was unfamiliar with the band, but I ended up really liking the track of theirs I found. Thanks to the listener for that one!

You might notice a few bits of static on this broadcast. I was having a bit of a connection problem on and off. I'm trying to figure out how to fix it for next week. Sorry about any audio-inconvenience this may have caused you.

Anyway...

The Playlist (Links lead to information on the bands or the album/compilation where the track came from. They are not links to indivudal mp3s. If you like what you hear, please support the artists by purchasing their albums or going to their shows.):

Running Low On Space Steam

The poll shows that most people (okay...this is hyperbole since there is a sample of 4 I'm basing this on) prefer the show as one long mp3. I plan on doing two parts for future shows, but this week it just isn't going to happen. I apologize. If you REALLY want it, shoot me an e-mail and I'll split the file.

And now for something completely different...not really.

Eugene Mirman is one of my all-time favorite comedians. He also happens to host a fake sci-fi themed talk show on Super Deluxe.

Enjoy!

(For anyone visiting from Music For Maniacs, Welcome!)

Extraterrestrial Tonight!

Not content to just be "mildly famous" on the Internet and TV, Eugene blasted himself into space to create this otherworldly talk show. Imagine Jay Leno if he was actually funny and smoked birth control pills.

October 13th Show - HAL'S Gone Wild

I am trying out a new host for the full-length show. As I noted previously, something weird happened with this file. For some reason at the very beginning, the left channel was fine, but after the failed attempt at a Chad Vangaalen song (sorry about that) the left channel's volume just dropped. So here is the deal with this show...I played with the volume a bit and tried to make it equal out. At times the left dominates a little where I maybe overcompensated for the loss. However, it didn't come out as bad as I thought.

Tracklist later tonight (if I don't fall asleep early) or tomorrow!

Update: Apparently Badongo does this weird file splitting, then you have to merge two files. I'm not too keen on that. I will post a megaupload later tonight.

October 13 Show Is Coming...in MONO!

I don't know what happened today, but the podcast recorded in mono. I will post tomorrow simply for posterity, but I find the recording to be a bit annoying. Apparently the mixing board was set to mono mode, and I just didn't think to check it since...well....that isn't the typical setting for that studio.

To make it up to you, enjoy this touching song:

Listener Submitted

Dj Tacopunch (listener and good friend) sent me a link to this flick site that shows off all of Hal Jordan's head injuries in the sci-fi comic book The Green Lantern.

This is great stuff: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dlanod/sets/72157594208628528/

If you are of the myspace-abled variety, you should check out Dj Tacopunch's profile as well (it has plenty of mixes for the downloading)

Sonovox!!!

A little bit ago the fantastic blog Music for Maniacs Mr. Fab posted an excellent post highlighting the sounds of the Sonovox. Fab posted a great mp3 of a Sonovox performance by Kay Kyser in the 1940 film "You'll Find Out". I happened to find a video clip of this performance that I thought might be of some interest to listeners of the show:

But that's not all! Mr. Fab has some great links to children's music using the device (go to his blog now!). I found this really great site that has a lot of great info and links on speech synthesis stuff here. Very cool.

Also...here is a voicebox version of Chocolate Rain.

Great Artificial Intelligences Think Alike

A while ago while searching your quaint "internet" I came across another superior intelligence that posted some interesting podcasts similar to what you would hear on The Deuce Project. I highly suggest checking these out. Oh, and since this is a web-only podcast, you don't have to deal with the FCC censorship subroutine that J-Unit 1 has to operate under on The Deuce Project broadcasts.

General Page: http://www.drownradio.com/

The Podcast Archive: http://www.drownradio.com/category/podcasts

Seriously, check this stuff out. It is awesome, and I think it is responsible for the Bruce Haack obsession that swept the Deuce Project last month.

First song is at the top of the list. I think this is correct (honestly, I haven't had time to give this a good listen yet, so I'm hoping I didn't skip anything). Listen to the readbacks at the stop-sets (when I talk) to be sure, but this is pretty close to accurate. Also, I think I got the Popchoir Berlin song from over at Music for Maniacs (link is listed in the right-hand column), so big thanks to them for posting that.

Velva

This is the band I wanted to play on tonight's program, but was unable to find any radio-safe tracks in the studio.

http://velva9000.com/

They are playing in Kalamazoo at Kraftbrau tonight. I'm too sick to go.
